Gut Reaction: The 2009 Golden Globes
January 12th 2009 05:36
Well the 2009 Golden Globes are in the books and now comes the home stretch of the Oscar season. However, before I start giving even more thought to the Oscar chase, it is the time to reflect on the return of the Golden Globe Awards...most notably its highs and its lows.
Mickey Rourke Wins for The Wrestlerwas the highlight of the night:
It was an absolute joy to see Mickey Rourke enter the winners circle for the first time in decades to collect his much deserved award for his performance as Randy "The Ram" Robinson. His speech was bizarre and oddly charming...he swore, Director Darren Aronofsky flipped him off, and he thanked his dogs, both living and dead. To see him back and triumphant has been one of the great pleasures of this awards season.
OK Award Voters, we get it, you like 30 Rock, now let someone else have a turn:
Again, another award show decides to lavish 30 Rock with more accolades. It won for Best Series Comedy, Tina Fey won for Best Actress Comedy, and Alec Baldwin won for Best Actor Comedy. I like the show, but I think that the critics have to realize that giving 30 Rock awards will not save the show. The fact that Tina Fey looks like Sarah Palin is what saved the show. One last thing...let Tracy Morgan talk more...his speech was hilarious.
After years of leaving award shows empty-handed Kate Winslet wins TWICE!!!:
Kate Winslet was the Chicago Cubs of acting. She was always nominated but never one. It was seemingly the curse of the Titanic...until the 2009 Golden Globes where she won for both Best Supporting Actress for her turn as a German Woman with Nazi secrets in The Reader and Best Actress for her turn as an unfulfilled housewife in Revolutionary Road. Normally I would be irritated by such things...but not in this case. Kate Winslet has been a consistently brilliant actress for nearly two decades and it is wonderful to finally see her rewarded. I don't think that she will win 2 Oscars at the Kodak Theatre...but she will surely leave with one.
Am I the only one who thinks that Christopher Nolan needs to get his head out of his own ass?:
We all knew that Heath Ledger was going to win for his turn as The Joker in The Dark Knight. The real question was, who would accept the award on his behalf? The natural choice would be a member of the late actor's family, such as his Father or former fiance Michelle Williams. Instead we got Dark Knight Director Christopher Nolan, who seems to have his head incredibly far up his own ass. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Nolan's work...I don't think he has made a bad film...but I think that it is impossible not to detect the arrogance and self importance that is reflected in his presentation.
He made a statement that when Heath Ledger died that "A whole was ripped in the future of cinema." Seriously Nolan, the kid was a solid actor but I think that cinema will go on. In the meantime, please remove your head from your ass and return to your film-making, which is very very good.
I'm kind of glad that Brad Pitt walked out of the Globes empty handed:
Every time that there was a cutaway to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, he seemed to have this pitific and arrogant smirk on his face. I'm sure that he listened to every critic and expert that predicted that his vehicle, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button would sweep its way through the awards season and win Best Picture at the Globes. Little did he know that the little movie that could, Slumdog Millionaire solidified its place as the true Best Picture front-runner and put a damper on Pitt's party...I actually couldn't be happier for that fact.
Note to Robert Downey Jr: When you lose the Oscar to Heath Ledger, try to not pout as much as you did at the Globes:
I love Robert Downey Jr. I loved his performance in Tropic Thunder. What I didn't love is that when Heath Ledger was announced as the winner for Best Supporting Actor, there was a cutaway to Downey to show him looking visibly unhappy that he had lost...almost childish in a way. When they came back after the commercial break they cut to Downey, where he had put on sunglasses to hide his facial expression and what I assume was disappointment. I mean come on Robert...you made one of the greatest comebacks in film history, are heading one of the most successful franchises in years, and was named "Entertainer of the Year" by Entertainment Weekly. I agree that Heath Ledger shouldn't win for Best Supporting Actor but try to at least be happy and respectful when they announce him for his Oscar win. You have had an amazing year...one that few will every experience. There is no need to be mad about Heath Ledger winning and you losing...leave the bitching to me.
Those are my gut reactions to the 2009 Golden Globes. If you have any other thoughts or comments out there, then please let me know what you thought. Enjoy the race to the Kodak Theatre and the Academy Awards.
