Having the #1 NFL Pregame show in America is...an honor?

October 26th 2008 23:24
I love football. I love talking about it, writing about it (which you can see at footballdogz.com) and I enjoy watching it. However, there is one thing that the empire of NFL television can do without...annoying, innane pregame show chatter. Every NFL pregame show follows the same formula. Take a soothing emcee...who is forced to be the balance to three or more former NFL greats who offer their own form of "expertise" to that day's NFL action...and any other issues surrounding the league. Some of these NFL greats include such golden throated jesters as Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Dan Marino, Shannon Sharpe, Mike Ditka, Keyshawn Johnson, Cris Collinsworth...I think you get the picture...I would rather have a root canal then willingly listen to these numskulls ramble on about why the Cowboys are a mess...or why Marvin Lewis still has a job (come to think about it...why does he?)

This brings me to the larger point of this post. Before the Terry Bradshaw spearheaded NFL on FOX pregame show, they always bring up that the NFL on FOX is the "number one pregame show on television." I'm sorry but having the number one NFL pregame show on television is like being the smartest kid with down syndrome. The barometer for success is that Fox's pregame show just irratates the majority of people just a little bit less than that of CBS, ESPN, or NBC. To listen to Terry Bradshaw babble on about how Brett Favre is the greatest QB of all time, or Howie Long talk about how Matt Millen should not have been fired from his job with the Lions despite his complete ineptitude, or listen to Jimmy Johnson talk about how he is the "Lead Dog"...whatever the hell that is, to listen to this is to know real grating pain.

Poor CBS, they just can't keep up. They don't have a braindead cajun ex-QB...well they do have Marino, but its not the same. They don't have a meatheaded ex Raider lineman...well they do have Shannon Sharpe, a meatheaded ex Bronco and Raven. They don't have a token headcoach who further desintegrates his status with inane chatter...never mind they have Bill Cowher. In fact, CBS actually stole James Brown from Fox to be the emcee of the show, but nothing helps. They are number 2...but should they really feel bad about it is the real question.

ESPN has so many freakin' personalities I think that my TV might explode at the mere sight of the program intro. They have Ditka, Keyshawn Johnson, TJ, Cris Carter, Steve Young, Emmitt Smith. I know that is quite a 6-pack of annoying. I barely watch this show ever...but their main purpose is to remind you that ESPN has Monday Night Football now. Despite the fact the MNF isn't the big deal that it was when it was on ABC. ABC's MNF has been replaced with NBC's Sunday Night Football. and ESPN's sunday night football has been replaced with...ESPN's Monday Night Football. MNF is now secondary...and having a jackass like Tony Kornheiser as the colorman does not help matters...Tony Kornheiser sucks at his job and should be fired!!!! Back to the pregame however...I don't think any more needs to be said, there are too many personalities and none of them are particularly interesting.

Last but not least is NBC's "Football Night in America." They do have a legendary sportscaster in Bob Costas and a political analyst returning to his roots in the always entertaining Keith Olbermann. Unfortunantly, they have what they call the "players desk." Which consists of former NY Giants headcase Tiki Barber, Steeler great Jerome Bettis, and last and least Cris Collinsworth. Cris Collinsworth notoriously has his head incredibly far up his own ass. This man rivals Tony Kornheiser for sheer arrogance and irritating syntax. NBC is the least irritating of the pregame programming, but that is not a compliment.

I would just like to see what would happen if there were no pregame shows on television. I mean the only purpose that they serve is that they give a platform for washed up athletes to give their supposed "expertise" on the NFL, and usually all of their analysis and predictions end up to be totally wrong. What is there purpose? The answer is nothing. Pregame shows are sadly here to stay...but lets all try to step up our game, shall we gentlemen?
