Leave Joe The Plumber Alone!!!!!
October 17th 2008 23:03
This past Wednesday, I watched the third...and mercifully final Presidential Debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. It contained the usual talking point spewing from both candidates, which typically results in me struggling to stay awake. Then John McCain unknowingly unleashed a media firestorm with one simple soliloquy about a man who asked Obama about his tax policies...a man who is now simply being referred to as "Joe the Plumber." Both candidates frequently mentioned Joe's name in reference to their respective tax and spend plans, and about how each candidate is looking out for you.
Since then, the media has decided to focus all of their energy onto this simple plumber, who I'm sure regrets ever talking to Obama. I'm sure he thought he was just getting a nice oppertunity to ask a Presidential candidate a question that mattered to him. I doubt he expected to end up a political pawn in a now endless 24 hour news cycle. Both sides of the political spectrum have just ravaged this poor guy, who was just asking a question. The guy just wants to know what hoops he would have to jump through if he were to attempt owning his own business. Now he is one of the most unfairly treated figures in the United States.
People in the Left Wing media have reported that Joe owes back taxes...in an attempt to discredit a FUCKING PLUMBER!!! He is probably just a simple man who lives a content life in a small town, he is not a political opponent, he's just a middle class man trying to make ends meet in a bad economy and wanted to know what the man who may be the leader of the free world would do to help him. Pundits on the left...Leave Him Alone!!! The more you attack him, the worse you look. Also, discrediting him would force people to realize that the Obama financial plan is unrealistic to a large degree, which would hurt the candidate that you have been trying to get elected.
People in the Right Wing media, quit using this man just to achieve a cheap political point. Don't use this man as a pawn in order to present the debatable position that a Conservative Regime in power would be the best thing for the working class in America. For the Past 8 years, we have had one of the most radically Conservative Presidents in history, and it has been a disaster. The bad economy that has hurt people like Joe the Plumber is due in large part to Presidential corruption, bad economic policy, and terrible foreign relations...which has all been caused by a Republican Regime. Just because you have a middle class symbol doesn't erase that fact, and John McCain's corresponding votes with Bush would continue to be emphasized.
I'm going to say something that MSNBC, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Air America are not going to like...LEAVE JOE THE PLUMBER ALONE!!! I'm sure that he is a nice man, but why should he be the barometer for what the middle class in the United States is and should be. The man just did what thousands of people have done over the better part of two years. He asked a political candidate what his positions are and how they would help him purchase a business. Now, because of the 24 hour news cycle, he is an unwitting pawn in some demented media parlor game and it needs to stop.
I know that it won't stop, and that poor Joe the Plumber's life won't be normal for a long time. The Left Wing media, through their reports of his tax issues has killed any chance that he has of getting a business loan, and the Right Wing media's use of Joe's name will redefine what the middle class is and will result in people ignoring the broad spectrum of issues come election day and could result in another election mistake.
The best thing for everyone involved is to drop this silly infatuation with Joe the Plumber. Let's just let him live his life and vote when election day arrives. The truth is that poor Joe will be nothing more than a political pawn by both sides and will be so until this quagmire known as the 2008 Presidential Election limps to its long awaited finish line.
