Remember the Olympic games this past August? The world was captivated by a Baltimore based butterface who was a physical beast and won a record 8 gold medals. The man a speaking of is none other than Michael Phelps. It was a dream ride for the young Phelps. He had everything a man could ask for...money, women, a guest hosting gig on SNL...which he did poorly. Above all he was and still is an American hero.
Then it all came crashing down on Super Bowl Sunday. it was revealed that the seemingly perfect Phelps is in fact a normal man in his 20's when he decided to smoke weed out of a bong. Worse than that...someone took a picture...that never happens at parties where someone is smoking weed!!!
Of course I am joking. Michael Phelps decided to smoke some pot...ok I think after winning 15 gold medals in his career, creating sympathy for the United States in the world, and being a pretty good sport in the face of the media onslaught that he has experienced in his short life...I think that he is entitled to smoke a little grass if he wants to.
The reason I bring up this story...which should just die...is that it was announced in the news today that Michael Phelps will not be brought up on possession charges despite the fact that the other people at the party where Phelps smoked out of the bong were all arrested and charged.
Well in my humble opinion, every person at that party should be released, because they simply did nothing wrong. The greatest annoyance to me about this whole saga is how every self righteous morality ideologue in this country, be it in the sports media or other, has tried to turn Phelps into a pariah just for doing what thousands of young men and women do every day.
The common argument presented is:
"Michael Phelps said that he was going to be a good role model for today's children. When he does something like smoke marijuana out of a pipe...it just sends the wrong message. Now I have to explain to my kids what Michael Phelps was doing and I...I...I just don't know"
Listen parents...you have to have the drug talk with your kids eventually and I think that you should thank Mr. Phelps for providing you with such an easy conversation segway. Also, I think that you should tell your kids that they are more than free to smoke pot...After they have won 8 gold medals for their country. I mean seriously, why can no one put this story into its proper context.
Michael Phelps decides to toke a little refer and all of a sudden all of the goodwill that everyone felt toward him is suddenly gone? Does the fact that he smoked pot make him any less of an American hero?...The answer is no. Does the fact that he smoked pot make him any less admirable to the world?...Again, the answer is no. Finally...does the fact that he smoked pot make him any less of a role model?...The answer is a resounding...HELL NO!!!
What Michael Phelps has accomplished in his short time on this planet is rivaled by no one on this planet. He is still a man to look up to regardless of his social activities. If you have a problem with Michael Phelps because he smoked some weed...well then that is simply your issue.
Michael Phelps is a man to admire...a fact that has been greatly lost in this whole witch-hunt. With any luck, this story will die an quick miserable death soon and we can all go back to the way things were...wishing and hoping that we can see Michael Phelps in the pool in 2012 for one last race in the sun.
And if after that, he wants to celebrate by sparking up a J on the awards podium...I say toke away my good man...toke away.
