Robin PottratzPalin Says "Bristol and Levi are no dropouts," but should they be?

Back when the world was first introduced to the Moose Mauling Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin, they thought they had found an everyday homebody with a perfect family and an idyllic existence that they could only hope to achieve. That lasted about four days. On the first day of the Republican National Convention, it had leaked to the press that Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol was pregnant out of wedlock and not just that, the father was one of the biggest immature rednecks to hit the town of Wasilla, Alaska in the history of the rural, snow-covered berg. If you think that I am being condescending to Levi Johnston in my characterization of him...then let Levi tell you his plight in his own words via MySpace:
“I’m a Fuckin’ redneck who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes. But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some Shit and just fuckin’ chillin’, I guess. Ya fuck with me I’ll kick ass...I don’t want kids.”
If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about Levi Johnston, I don't know what will. The Republican media machine handled the story very well but it still lingered in the minds of some Americans as it poked a hole in the seemingly flawless depiction of the modern family that the Palins seemed to represent.
Well, November 4th came and went. Obama was elected and the rogue VP candidate decided to return to Alaska along with her family. We hadn't heard much from Levi and Bristol until this past weekend when they gave birth to a boy named Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston (I Know, what a name). Now the question that faces every teenage parent has come up: Should I stay in school or get a job to support my family?
You would think that this wouldn't be an issue for the Palin family, I mean during the campaign, Sarah Palin allegedly spent $150,000 on her wardrobe, however as the father of the child, Levi has to deal with a whole different set of circumstances. A story in the AP in October claimed that Levi Johnston had dropped out of school in order to work on the North Slope Oil Fields...which would be a reasonable thing for him to do given his situation.
However, Governor Mooseburger reared her head on Wednesday to inform the media that both Bristol and Levi were still in High School and both were taking correspondence courses. However, I can't help but wonder if that is what Levi Johnston wants to do.
When Levi Johnston was introduced to the world as Bristol Palin's baby daddy, it was the opinion of many (myself included) that he was little more than a political prisoner. He did not want to marry Bristol Palin, and as evidenced by his MySpace page, did not want to be a father at 17. However, because he happened to knock up the daughter of the Republican Vice Presidential nominee, he had no other choice. I'm sure that he just wanted to bone a hot chick in his high school...but look where that got him.
So, Levi is now stuck for the rest of his life. He is now responsible for another human life, and when he tries to do the responsible thing and get a job, the Governor announced that he is staying in school. I personally don't believe that it is her place to dictate what Levi Johnston does from this point on as it relates to his future. She used him to put out a potential fire in her campaign and she still seems to be acting like he is a prince charming when she doesn't need to anymore...and worse, she is acting like he is her child.
I think that given her new fame and notoriety, Sarah Palin can foot the bill for her first grandchild. She has the financial means that Levi doesn't. If Bristol Palin wants to stay in school, then I encourage her to...but only because her baby is in seemingly financially secure hands in the Palin household. Levi Johnston should get a job in order to support his new child. He sacrificed his right to be young and irresponsible when he got Bristol Palin pregnant...and it is not the place of Grandma Sarah to tell him otherwise.
If Levi goes back to school, then good for him. I do wish that if he is able to release himself from the domestic prison that is being a part of Sarah Palin's family...that he becomes more responsible.
A final word of advice for young Levi Johnston: next time you want to bang a hot chick in your high school, find out who her parents are and for God's sake...just slap down the 5 bucks for a box of condoms.
