Susan Boyle: Ok Everybody, I Get It, She's Ugly
April 20th 2009 00:23
Meet the Internet's New Darling Susan Boyle...She Has Had to Overcome so Much...actually only one thing...Being Super Ugly
The first thing that I want you to do before reading this is to take a gander at the photo above. Take a long hard look. This is Susan Boyle, an ugly duckling from the UK who went on Britan's version of American Idol and left Simon Cowell speechless with her opera singing. Now, the video of her singing has caught on to Youtube and she is now an internet sensation.
Of course the incredibly stupid media has caught wind of the story and has presented each segment about her with a variation on the same idea:
"Susan Boyle has never had a boyfriend, never been kissed, and now, after overcoming so much is an internet sensation all over the world."
Pardon my language: HOW FUCKING STUPID ARE PEOPLE?!!! HOW FUCKING STUPID IS THE MEDIA?!!!
Now, I don't want to be mistaken, I have nothing against Susan Boyle. I think that she is very talented and I'm sure that she is a very nice person. My frustration with people and the media who are so ignorant that it is infuriating.
What in god's name has Susan Boyle overcome? She's not mentally or physically disabled, accept for mild learning issues. She is not an unsuccessful person, she sung for her church and chose to take care of her mother in her final days. There were no real tragedies in her life...her mother was 91 Granted, her life was not easy, but its not like she was Oliver Twist begging for gruel.
The only real handicap I see, is her inability to tweeze her eyebrows. If Susan Boyle were a knockout...no one would care. Ugliness is not a handicap...and the media needs to realize this. Don't act as though she is paralyzed or terminal...that is even more disrespectful to her.
In the meantime, since she is in the public eye already, I do wish her the best. The question is, will she be pressured to get a makeover...because if she gets a makeover, her career and novelty is probably over.
I don't know what to make of the whole story. I wish Susan Boyle the best...but ugliness has existed in the music industry for years. Lyle Lovett, Tom Petty, and Amy Winehouse are not lookers by any means but no one makes a big deal about how much they have all had to overcome. The only difference is the Boyle made her splash on Britan's equivalent of American Idol...which may be the stupidest global phenomenon ever created.
As a society, we are programmed to believe that American Idol and the opinions of Simon Cowell are the only barometer for success...and that is just not the case.
Above all, I think that the combination of American Idol and the media that fuels it is undoubtedly the most obnoxious entertainment combo currently going. Case in point...Susan Boyle, anyone can see that she is talented, but it wasn't until she was involved with the british American Idol that anyone acknowledged it.
Lastly, I want to emphasize that my beef is not with Susan Boyle...it is with the stupid media and American Idol devotees that create 15 minute celebrities based on superficial reasons. Susan Boyle has not overcome anything...just physical ugliness, and it is sad to me that given recent history the American Idol global culture will chew her up, spit her out, and forget about her.
I might be wrong...but I sadly doubt it.

In addition to this, she's not ugly. But she could use some mentoring on how to wear her hair and yes, the eye brows must get fixed! Also, I think she should either grow her hair a bit longer or have a shorter haircut which might really look cute on her. The present length and the way it's worn makes her look frumpy. Learning handicapped people sometimes don't learn the intricacies of socially fitting in. Some of her manerisms need to be fine tuned for performing in front of an audience. But she just needs to have balance and should stay herself in the process. I hope she has a great mentor who will lovingly teach her how to have better stage presence and how to wear her hair in the most attractive style to suit her. I think this lady deserves all the acolades that she gets. It's like..one of the little people making it big...Underdog wins...so to speak...although she hasn't won the big prize yet, she has certainly has won the hearts of millions of people.

Hi!
I'm new here so I hope I get this right and it comes up okay.
First off let me say that I agree with what you're saying. The only thing I will add is that you have been proved correct.
I notice this was written on April 20th and it is now Jun 1st and Susan Boyle has not just been chewed up and spat out, she never even reached the dinner table. She has already entered The Priory, that building where "celebrities" of all ilk tend to go when in breakdown mode. She simply cracked up under the media pressure and the glitz.
As she "only" finished second, I suspect that Simon Cowell, the media and her "fans" will soon forget her (they probably already have).
She DID have a makeover, not that it made much difference, and she DID have her obligatory rave at some onlookers and cops when she attended some event or other and ...that was it.
My personal belief is that the media and Simon Cowell probably used her for one thing only...publicity.
Her 15 minutes of fame have been the shortest that I can recall.
Sadly, you were correct about what would happen but it's not just the "Idol" culture to blame, it's also the public at large that make these shows popular who must also take a share of the blame. If people didn't watch, shows such as these would soon disappear because there would be no money to be made.
