The Hills: who watches this crap?
October 10th 2008 20:25
This post is about the MTV show "The Hills." Mainly, my concern that this show is single handedly dumbing down our nation's youth. Now I admit, I watch my fair share of reality television. I watch Bret Michaels try to find his "Rock of Love." I watched D-listers struggle with addiction in "Celebrity Rehab." I even recently dedicated two months of my life to see which reality star truly "loved money." So my admission of enjoying junk reality leaves one obvious question: Why do I hate "The Hills?" Is there no difference between all of those other shows and "The Hills?"
The answer is...yes there is a difference...the casts of the three reality shows I admitted to watching, as trashy as they may be, have a goal at the end of the show. Those girls want to be Bret's "Rock of Love." Those addicted D-listers do want to get clean. Those reality losers really do want to win that money. What goals do the cenobytes on MTV's hit reality farce have. Yes, I know that Lauren Conrad wants to be a fashion designer, that Heidi wants to be a singer, and that Spencer wants to spend the rest of his life getting to tell people that he gets to bang the hot blonde one. How are those goals engaging to the audience? The answer is that they aren't. None of these people are particularly talented or smart. The only reason that they have to oppertunities that they do on "The Hills" is that they are pretty...nothing more.
Despite the lack of intelligence, manners, or any likability of any of the show's cast members, this show continues to be a huge hit for MTV. Does anyone remember when MTV used to have sharp programming like Daria, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Undergrads. Better yet, remember when MTV used to show music videos...now the M in MTV doesn't even make sense. "The Hills" represents how far MTV has disintegrated into nothing more that answering the question: How do pretty rich white people in California live? However, the new viewing audience that eats up sugary snacks like "The Hills" come in absolute mass in order to have this question answered. The show's season 4 premiere earned 3.5 million viewers, while this is down from season 3 it is still a large audience for a cable reality show.
This brings me back to the original question of "Who watches this crap?" The answer is the 12-34 age demographic. Its season 4 premiere was down 9% in this demo, but it still drew 2.1 million viewers. I am freaking astounded by this. There is really nothing compelling about this show...nothing really happens. Yeah Lauren doesn't like Spencer and because Spencer is dating Heidi, then Lauren and Heidi can't be best friends anymore, and now Audrina is speed dating or some shit. The truth is...I don't care about any of these people or any of their unimportant problems. If there is one reason above all that I can't understand why people watch this show, it can be summed up in 2 words...Spencer Pratt.
I'm not talking about anything he has done on the show...I am referring to a legendary appearance on David Letterman that sums up how big of an unimportant waste of sperm he really is. The following is an excerpt from Pratt's interview with David Letterman (a tv host incapable of feigning interest):
Letterman: What do you do exactly?, are you like an entrepenuer or something, is that what you do?
Pratt: I basically live and breathe pop culture and the entertainment business. I currently am in a partnership with the next Jay-Z. He's 12 years old, he's better than Jay-Z at 12 so imagine him at 20. And then I...
Letterman: So you're like his manager, his mentor?
Pratt: I'm his partner...my artists, I don't try to manage their careers, we're a team. I'm also have the future Michael Jackson. Dewan, he's 23.
Letterman: Dewan?
Pratt: Oh, you'll be reading about him soon.
Pratt then went on to tell Letterman that he gets paid to go to nightclubs for "a minimum $100,000." I will skip ahead because I still have to mention his shit for brains girlfriend, Heidi Montag. Toward the end of the interview, Letterman decided to cut to Montag in the green room:
Letterman: Heidi, how do you think its going so far?
Montag: Really well, Spencer's the man.
Letterman: For what? (hold for laughs) I wish you were out here instead of Spencer (hold for laughs) Is all this nonsense about $100,000 true?
Montag: I thought he was lowballing it.
This interview is just a taste of the crapola that this show produces. The scary part is that these are the people that America's youth identifies with. A bleach blonde, shit for brains, wannabe entrepeneur and his equally bleach blonde, shit for brains, singer girlfriend. It does fill me with comfort that the ratings of this show have been on somewhat of a decline, however it will never stop boggling my mind as to why this show was popular in the first place. I never thought I would say this, but everyone: Read a Book. I don't even read books and I am encouraging people to read books instead of continuing to feed this MTV created, angel faced, empty headed monster.

I agree on the most part. I wish people would stop watching this, but hey, it's a mindless show, for mindless, uneducated people. I agree, and I'm 16.
