This Just In: Mike Huckabee has a TV show

November 11th 2008 00:15
Last Sunday night, I was flipping through the channels when I came across the Fox News Channel. What I saw filled me with a combination of shock, disbelief, horror, and incredible amusement. Apparently, former Presidential candidate and Arkansas based Jesus freak Mike Huckabee has his own television show...that's right, the man who proudly proclaimed that he doesn't believe in evolution during the primary debates and received endorsements from the likes of Chuck Norris and Ric Flair...has a TV show. Only the Fox News Channel, who has now proudly employed Karl Rove to their staff would give someone like Mike Huckabee free reign for one hour every Saturday and Sunday night. Let the thought of Mike Huckabee having his own show sink in for a moment...(take 5 to 10 seconds to think)...alright then, now let me describe this train wreck of a program.

For starters, Mike Huckabee has a house band. The band is known as...wait for it..."The Little Rockers." Also, in this band...Mike Huckabee plays the bass guitar, who knew that the evangelical candidate knew how to play the bass...hes a regular Paul McCartney. The show begins with Huckabee taking questions from a live audience. The questions are typically softball...meaning that they are largely open ended and allow Huckabee to go off on a tangent about whatever the topic is...whether it is abortion, gay marriage, the economy, etc. They are typically about social issues, which are what helped Huckabee get to where he is today.

He then will eventually bring on a guest, who is typically of the conservative persuasion. In fact, Huckabee gloated that he was one of the first people to land an exclusive interview with Joe the Plumber. Another guest was frequent Fox News musical act Aaron Tippin who has been branded a "country music superstar," despite the fact that his only song is the politically driven "Drill Here, Drill Now," which is about potential offshore drilling. The format of bringing on a "guest" just follows through with the basic FNC platform which is to disguise their ideology through basic news program techniques like a guest star or leading questions.

Eventually, Huckabees 60 minutes of lame finally come to an end with Mike Huckabee playing the bass guitar with "The Little Rockers." The audience seemingly claps along and eventually, Huckabee wishes everyone a good night and lets them know how they can purchase tickets to a live taping of Huckabee. I will be honest, there are worse ways to kill an hour...I just can't think of any at the moment.

The point of this post was not to poke fun at Gov. Huckabee for his political affiliation or the ridiculousness of the Fox News Channel in giving perhaps the most alienating republican candidate his own show. The point of this post is to make fun of the fact that Mike Huckabee has his own television show. Mike Huckabee may be the whitest, blandest, and just generally creepy man in the realm of politics or political television. This was a man who refused to concede defeat during the primaries even though it was statistically impossible for him to win...not because of determination, I believe that it was because he didn't figure out the fact that he couldn't win. Given all of that, how in the hell did Mike Huckabee get his own television show?

I give FNC credit, they are at least trying to give this man a personality. However, Mike Huckabee is proof positive that having a guitar on your torso can't make everyone cool. The most interesting aspect of this new partnership is the fact that Huckabee has recently finished 3rd in the ratings, behind both CNN and MSNBC who usually put on banal programming on these typically poor nights for prime time television. I think that it may only be a matter of time before Rupert Murdoch decides to pull the plug on "Huckabee," until that day comes, I encourage any fan of ludicrous media to take fifteen minutes out of their Saturday or Sunday night and tune in to the pitiful efforts of a failed Presidential candidate and his ragtag cover band.
