Winter Films = Summer Trailers
November 20th 2008 02:35
I'll keep the intro short, sweet, and to the point. During the summer months, when audiences cram movie theatres to see superheros, animated fare, and other big budget blockbusters...they are usually treated to movie trailers that feature films of a bit more prestigious variety. If you went to "The Dark Knight" or "Iron Man" you were probably introduced to trailers from such films as "Changeling," "Australia" "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" or a variety of others. There is a flip side to that coin...we are now in the winter months, where the Oscar bait films that were advertised in the summer are now in theatres and the popcorn cinema that will arrive next summer is now being advertised. Only a few have been released up to this point...so I will give my thoughts on a few of my favorite trailers for films that will be released next spring or summer.
1. "Friday the 13th" release date February 13th, 2009: What I like about this trailer is its use of the grainy voice over from the 1980 original accompanied with the over-caffeinated camera work that made the previous Michael Bay produced horror revamp, 2003' "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," so watchable and interesting.
Trailer: Really Long Link
2. "Up" release date May 29, 2009: The latest from Pixar may not be as high of quality as last years "Wall-e," but the animated giant has not produced one movie that would be considered bad and this trailer packs a great deal of whimsy in just a few minutes.
Trailer: Really Long Link
3. "Terminator Salvation" release date: May 22, 2009: Coming off the successful relaunch of the Batman franchise, it will be interesting to see whether or not Christian Bale can be two for two with film series reboots as he assumes the role of John Connor. He will easily be the best actor to portray the character...and I think that there will be a loyal fan following after the success of "The Dark Knight." This cryptic trailer also helps.
Trailer: Really Long Link
4. "Monsters vs Aliens" release date: March 27, 2009: I appreciate the fact that the title basically tells you the plot of the movie. I also think that this animated flick from Dreamworks has an interesting array of voice talent from Reese Witherspoon, Will Arnett, Seth Rogan, Rainn Wilson, and Steven Colbert. This is a fun trailer...and the battle between blob and machine at the end is hysterical.
Trailer: Really Long Link
5. "Angels and Demons" release date: May 15, 2009: Honestly, I have never read any of Dan Brown's books, I didn't see "The Da Vinci Code," and I couldn't care less about this movie. The only reason that I am posting it is that this movie will make a lot of money and for those who won't see it...I just get the feeling that watching the trailer is just as good as watching the actual movie.
Trailer: Really Long Link
6. "2012" release date: July 10, 2009: This is one of the most chilling...and head-scratching trailers in recent memory. It involves a bunch of monks and a tidal wave. Yes I will admit that it looks like "The Day After Tomorrow" redux...its from the same director. However, it still looks interesting...and isn't that really the point of teaser trailers.
Trailer: Really Long Link
7. "Star Trek" release date May 8, 2009: Its the nerd event of the summer of 2009. I will include both the trailer and the teaser because the teaser is so well done. I can't help but laugh at one aspect of the trailer. In the trailer we see two people in a sex scene...it is ironic because most hardcore trekkies have probably never been in that situation. Truth be told, I can't stand JJ Abrams..."Cloverfield" and "Lost" are just weird for the sake of being weird. However both trailers show that "Star Trek" could convince me otherwise.
Teaser: Really Long Link
Trailer: Really Long Link
8. "Watchmen" release date March 6, 2009: I have never read the graphic novel. I know nothing about the story...but I cannot wait to see this movie. It just looks so cool and the trailer and teaser are just filled with such dark and cryptic fun. You may disagree but I am going to post the teaser and trailer so that you can decide for yourself.
Teaser: Really Long Link
Trailer: Really Long Link
Those are the trailers for the 2009 releases that I am looking forward to. Do you think I have forgotten any?...then please drop me a link or question. I appreciate getting help of any kind...and if anyone of you "rick roll" me I will hunt you down I swear to God.
Until Next Time,
Robin
