WWE Backlash 2009: A Geek's Predictions
April 26th 2009 21:06
Well, it is time for that annual Wrestlemania hangover event otherwise known as Backlash. Typically, Backlash just serves to be a bookend for the feuds, titles, and storylines that peaked at Wrestlemania, and this year's show will be no exception. However, Backlash is typically one of the most fun events of the year because it is the equivalent of wrestling repertoire spring cleaning. Wrestlers get to try moves and spots that they weren't able to at the high prestige Wrestlemania. So I will be watching with great interest from that perspective.
Now on to my predictions:
CM Punk vs Kane:
This match is the definition of "filler material." CM Punk won the "Money in the Bank" ladder match for a second consecutive year...a move which makes little to know sense. WWE just won't get off of the CM Punk hope train...and that continues tonight as he gets an "underdog" style win over "The Big Red Machine" Kane.
Chris Jericho vs Ricky Steamboat:
One of the true pleasant surprises of Wrestlemania was the opportunity to see Ricky Steamboat wrestle again...and see that when it comes to in-ring performance...he's still got it. Its time for Chris Jericho to move on to something better than this go-nowhere storyline with the legends. I say that Jericho gets the win...but this will be a better match than anticipated.
I Quit Match
Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy:
Truthfully, even though these two were able to put on a terrific match at Wrestlemania, and a potential classic match at Backlash, this storyline has not really been executed at optimum levels and has fallen flat as a result. It is time for this storyline to end...and it will at Backlash with Jeff Hardy finally getting a hard fought win over his brother.
ECW Championship
Jack Swagger (c) vs Christian:
Christian has made a nice comeback despite the fact that he has been put in the pro wrestling equivalent of purgatory...AKA the new ECW. Now it is his best chance at climbing the ECW mountain by defeating the long reigning champion Jack Swagger for the ECW title. Now, I like Swagger, despite his uninteresting character and lack of mic skills. I just think that it is Christian's time to wear the gold...or in this case purple...ECW championship.
6 Man Tag for WWE Championship where if Legacy Wins Randy Orton becomes Champion and if HHH/Batista/Shane McMahon win then HHH retains [B]
Legacy (Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, and Ted Dibiase) vs HHH (c), Batista, and Shane McMahon:
This match is by far the hardest to predict of the evening. I was shocked when Orton did not walk out of Wrestlemania as the WWE Champion. This also brings up another purpose of Backlash...to rectify the inequities and mistakes at Wrestlemania. I predict that HHH's team won't be able to work together and Legacy gets the win...making Orton the new WWE Champion.
[B]Last Man Standing Match for the World Heavyweight Championship
John Cena (c) vs Edge:
I can't help but laugh when Cena gets on a mic and calls his feud with Edge as "one of the greatest rivalries in sports entertainment history." It truly isn't even close to being worthy of that claim. However, one thing is undeniable...both Cena and Edge are great showmen and they will prove it by putting on a classic match that adheres to both of their less technical styles. I predict that Edge finds a way to win the match...and his (if you can believe it) 8th world title at Backlash.
Also on the card...is Santino Marella's "sister" Santina on the Khali kiss cam...this is purely a novelty and comedic event on the card...so it was barely worth mentioning.
Those are my picks for Backlash 2009. I will be sitting back with a bowl of popcorn and a soda, taking in all of the action...and hopefully predicting accurately.
Enjoy the show!!!
