WWE Cyber Sunday: A Geek's Predictions

October 26th 2008 20:09
Well, its that time of year again for pro wrestling fans. In 2004, WWE created an interactive pay-per-view in which online fan voting would determine various opponents, stipulations, and special guests for various matches on the card. It was called "Taboo Tuesday" and since its inception it has become one of the most genuinely unpredictable and fun events of the year. What makes this event different is that the matches and storylines themselves are completely secondary. The impact of fan voting is the main attraction.

Over the years, it became "Cyber Sunday," which I'm sure has to do with the fact that fans are more willing to order pay-per-views on Sundays rather than Tuesdays. Also this year, WWE has changed the voting process in order to insure even more unpredictability. This year, the majority of matches and stipulations will have their votes tabulated solely by means of text message. In the past, voting has been conducted via the WWE's website, which has insured that children will vote for the faces and the event will be more predictable than it could be. By having the voting take place with mostly text message, the WWE has assured that the majority of the votes will come from the smart marks, which will make the results very interesting.

Now, lets get down to my attempted predictions for the most unpredictable show of the year:

Pick the tag team match: Either Mickie James and Jaime Noble vs Layla and William Regal, The Miz and John Morrison vs Cryme Tyme, or CM Punk and Kofi Kingston vs Simply Priceless for the World Tag Team Championship:

I personally would like to see the Tag Team Championship being up for grabs...seeing as that it would involve the now buried CM Punk in a somewhat important match...I do predict that it will be Miz/Morrison vs Cryme Tyme with Miz and Morrison getting an unclean win.

Intercontinental Championship: Santino Marella (c) vs Either Roddy Piper, Goldust, or the Honky Tonk Man:
This will be the most fun match of the night. I am fine with any of these opponents...however I would like to see the cancer survivor Piper become IC champion again. I predict that Piper gets the nod...but Santino steals a win.

United States Championship: Shelton Benjamin (c) vs Either R-Truth, MVP, or Festus:
I would love to see Festus in this match...but I predict that R-Truth gets the nod. Benjamin and Killings will have the match of the night...and Benjamin will get a clean win.

Kane vs Rey Mysterio in either a falls count anywhere match, a no holds barred match, or a 2 out of 3 falls match:
This is one where I will probably be wrong. I would like to see a falls count anywhere match...but I predict that the fans will vote for a 2 out of 3 falls match. I predict that this will go to the 3rd fall and Kane will get the win.

Undertaker vs Big Show in either an I Quit Match, a Last Man Standing Match, or a Knockout Match:
This is the one stipulation where the voting was done online. I am hoping for Last Man Standing, but I have a feeling that it will be a Knockout match...and that Taker will get the win.

ECW Championship: Matt Hardy (c) vs either Mark Henry, Finlay, or Evan Bourne:
I predict that Evan Bourne gets the nod in this match, and that this will rival Benjamin/R-Truth for match of the night. Bourne will provide his usual arial fireworks...but Hardy will get a well-earned win.

WWE Championship: HHH (c) vs either Jeff Hardy, Vladamir Kozlov, or both in a Triple Threat Match:
I predict that the smart marks will make this a triple threat match...and that is ironic because HHH will get another well earned win, which will set up HHH vs Kozlov at Survivor Series.

World Heavyweight Championship: Chris Jericho (c) vs Batista with either Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels, or Stone Cold Steve Austin as the special guest referee:
This one is also unpredictable. It could either be Austin or Michaels as the special referee. I predict the Austin gets the nod even though I will probably be wrong. In the match, I think that it would be stupid for Jericho to get a credible win over Michaels and then lose to Batista. I predict that it won't be clean but the face referee will have to count Batista's shoulders to the mat.

Those are my predictions for the always unpredictable Cyber Sunday. I will probably be wrong...but nothing significant will really happen at this event so it is ok.

One last thing: For telling me that he has read my blog: Matthew James Kelly is the man!!
