Well, it is time to begin the WWE's annual summer pay per view stretch of gimmick events and matches with every storyline culminating in August with Summerslam. That road will begin with the regular mixed bag that is Judgment Day. This event can prove to be fun and enjoyable...and also very unmemorable. It is usually an event for the token stars (see Batista) to shine while giving some other wrestlers the opportunity to get on a big show.
Now on to the predictions:
John Morrison vs Shelton Benjamin:
This match has the potential to be an absolute show stealer with two of the best pure athletes in the WWE going one on one. Morrison's recent face turn has been a bit head scratching...but he has "future world champion" written all over him and this will be a good opportunity to show the whole WWE audience what he can do. I think Benjamin is a perfect opponent...and Morrison picks up the win in a stellar contest.
CM Punk vs Umaga:
This match serves to present some intrigue. I don't get the constant need of WWE to put CM Punk on pay per view cards when there are much better performers who can't get a break (see the ECW program). It is nice to see Umaga back...I always enjoy seeing an athletic big man. I predict that WWE re-establishes Umaga as a dominating force and he gets a decisive win over CM Punk.
Intercontinental Championship
Rey Mysterio (c) vs Chris Jericho:
This match has the potential of being the best of the night. These are two top performers in a match together where they could not only shoot themselves right up to the top of the Smackdown roster where they belong...but bring some much needed credibility back to the IC title (if they haven't already). I expect a terrific back and forth contest with Chris Jericho adding to his title as the greatest IC champion of all time with his 9th title win.
ECW Championship
Christian (c) vs Jack Swagger:
I hope that this match doesn't open the show and is instead higher on the card. At Backlash, these two put on a tremendous match that restored some credibility to the title. ECW is not longer stuck in the days of Mark Henry as champion...it is back with a lot of exciting young talent. As for this match, I expect these two to do it again...with Christian picking up another win and a successful title defense.
John Cena vs Big Show:
I couldn't help but laugh when on a recent episode of Raw, Jerry Lawler proclaimed "finally we are going to see Cena take on the Big Show." Jerry, have you not been paying attention for the last 5 years? These two have wrestled each other more times than I can recall. These two will go at it again...Cena will sell his injury for a while (I will admit the searchlight stunt at Backlash was pretty cool)...Cena will eventually become Superman and win the match.
WWE Championship
Randy Orton (c) vs Batista:
Batista, the token face main eventer vs Orton, the white hot heel. This match wont be pretty, but it may be entertaining to watch. It won't be too long...which is probably a good thing. In the end, I say that either Orton picks up an unclean win...or HHH costs Batista the title and goes back to his pursuit of Orton. Either way, Orton wins.
World Heavyweight Championship
Edge (c) vs Jeff Hardy:
This match poses a lot of interesting questions. The big rumor is that Jeff Hardy will leave WWE in June when his contract expires. However, he is so unpredictable that we can never be too sure of that. It would be nice to see Edge actually retain his title for a change. I somehow think that will be the case at Judgment Day. Edge finds a way to win...and Hardy counts down the days.
Those are my predictions for Judgment Day 2009. It won't be pretty...but it may be damn fun. Enjoy the show everyone.
