WWE Night of Champions: A Geek's Predictions
July 26th 2009 17:40
When WWE first came up with the concept for "Night of Champions" two years ago, I was intrigued...finally an event where every title is defended and given center stage...something that rarely happens in today's wrestling climate. For the past two years, "Night of Champions" has delivered some interesting...and infamous moments. From last year, where HHH finally defeated John Cena clean...to 2007, which will be best known for being the calm before the Chris Benoit storm.
All morbid thoughts aside...I expect "Night of Champions" to be a fun and intriguing event...so lets get to the matches.
WWE Womens Championship
Michelle McCool (C) vs Melina:
Its the battle of the butterface (Michelle McCool...admit it people) vs the most flexible woman on the roster. McCool can actually wrestle...and Melina's offense is just interesting to watch. I predict that McCool retains.
WWE Divas Championship
Maryse (C) vs Mickie James:
This may follow suit with the WWEs unspoken policy about the womens titles over the past few years...when you don't know what to do with it...just put it on Mickie James. That will be the case tonight as Mickie James takes her first Divas (I know, the belt is a freakin butterfly) championship
6 Pack Challenge for the United States Championship
Kofi Kingston (C) vs MVP vs Big Show vs Carlito vs Jack Swagger vs The Miz:
Normally, this match would be easy to predict...in single fall matches involving more than 3 participants...refer back to the champion. However, in this case...I see The Miz walking out with the title. He would bring a good heel heat to the title...plus I think WWE will reward him after ignoring him after his Cena match at "The Bash."
Intercontinental Championship
Rey Mysterio (C) vs Dolph Ziggler:
If there is any wrestler that has benefited the most from last April's draft, it had to be Dolph Ziggler. He went from a know nothing role on Raw, to working his way up the heel ladder on Smackdown. This may be the most difficult match of the night to predict. I could see Mysterio retaining...but I could also see him dropping the title to a guy working his way up and returning to the world title picture. At this point I see Mysterio winning...but I wouldn't bet my house on it.
Unified Tag Team Championship
Chris Jericho and a mystery partner (C) vs Legacy:
I am thrilled that this match is taking place...there is a lot to like. Who will Jericho's partner be? Will Legacy capture the unified tag titles? Holy crap, are the tag titles relevant again for the first time in over seven years? We don't know the answers...it would have been nice to see Jericho and Edge have a long run...but what can you do...I expect Legacy to get the victory and win the unified tag titles.
ECW Championship
Tommy Dreamer (C) vs Christian:
It is great to see the ECW title relevant again. I love Tommy Dreamer as the champion...and I love Christian as the challenger. I am a little tired of the same people in the title picture...but I am welcoming one last ride for Christian and Dreamer. I expect a great match with Dreamer getting the win.
World Heavyweight Championship
CM Punk (C) vs Jeff Hardy:
It was complete BS how they had CM Punk cash in MITB thirty seconds after Jeff Hardy defeated Edge at "Extreme Rules." Why is it that WWE insists on pushing CM Punk...he is simply not as great of a character as WWE seems to think he is. I do like that he is being pushed as a heel...but that doesn't take away any head scratching aspects of his popularity. I expect Punk to get an unclean win...and go on to "Summerslam."
Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship
Randy Orton (C) vs HHH vs John Cena:
The important thing is that we have never seen this match before...I mean except at Wrestlemania 24. I am starting to get bored with HHH vs Orton...however I expect that feud to end in a Hell in a Cell match. My preference...and pick for a win is John Cena, so that he may do something else with the title, while HHH and Orton can continue on.
Those are my predictions for "Night of Champions." I may be wrong...but I will sure have some fun watching.
Until Next Time,
Enjoy the show
