Well, the road to Wrestlemania has officially begun. The first pit stop will be in Detroit, Michigan for the 2009 installment of one of the most traditionally fun and exciting events of the year: The Royal Rumble...more specifically the 30-man over the top rope Royal Rumble match with a trip to Wrestlemania on the line. Not only that, there are some intriguing title matches on the undercard, which should make this years rumble something to behold.
Well, lets get on with the predictions:
WWE Women's Championship
Melina vs Beth Phoenix (c):
I have been thoroughly impressed with how Melina's in ring skills have improved since her return. She seems more athletic and more fearless...a rarity in the model filled paragon of the women's division. I expect Phoenix to get an unclean win...but this match will be better than anticipated.
ECW Championship
Matt Hardy vs Jack Swagger (c):
I am still scratching my head at a number of things regarding this match.
1. Matt Hardy did a stellar job for 5 months as ECW Champion. He defended it regularly and restored credibility to that title and to the program...and so he drops it to...the largely unimpressive Jack Swagger?
2. Am I the only one noticing that Jack Swagger doesn't have a gimmick, character, or even a personality? He is called the "All-American American," what the hell does that even mean?
As regards to a prediction, I fully expect the reign of Swagger to continue. I think that Matt Hardy is meant for bigger things. It won't be clean...but Swagger leaves with the strap.
WWE Championship
Edge vs Jeff Hardy (c):
For such an exciting title win...the WWE has done a horrible job with Jeff Hardy since he won the title. They have had him in this weird "bad luck conspiracy" storyline and the fact that he is the champion has been little more than an afterthought.
The whole storyline seems to be building up to the return of Christian at the Rumble. So my prediction is this: If Christian returns, Edge wins...if he doesn't, Hardy wins...It all comes down to Christian.
World Heavyweight Championship
JBL vs John Cena (c):
JBL and his "Employee" Shawn Michaels serves to be the only intriguing part of this match. It is all headed toward an HBK/JBL match at 'Mania...the only question will be whether or not it is for the title. I predict not...Cena walks out with the strap.
2009 Royal Rumble Match - Winner gets a Title Match at Wrestlemania
As per the usual...there are only a few possible participants who could win this thing. I would say Orton, Jericho, HHH, Undertaker...and possibly HBK have the only real shots. I expect HHH to emerge on top because he is getting the only Royal Rumble related storyline right now...but I could be wrong.
Those are my predictions. Enjoy this year's Rumble because after all...it is the fastest hour on television.
