WWE Summerslam: A Geek's Predictions
August 23rd 2009 21:28
There is no dancing around this one. Now peppering the syntax to create the illusion that this is a huge pay per view wrestling event...it is not necessary. Summerslam is the 2nd largest pay per view event of the year. The matches are usually top notch so expectations will be high.
Now, on to the predictions:
MVP vs Jack Swagger:
This match features two of the biggest candidates for the Raw brands next breakout main eventer. My instinct tells me that MVP will be the first of these two to reach that plateau...but Swagger wins the match.
Kane vs The Great Khali:
There are a lot of interesting elements concerning this match. The first is that this contest is in fact a rematch of a match that took place at Wrestlemania 23 in Detroit. Khali came out victorious in that match...I predict Kane getting the victory this time...which is a good thing because there is speculation that Kane may not be around much longer.
Unified Tag Team Championship
Chris Jericho and Big Show(c) vs Cryme Tyme:
It has been nice to see Cryme Tyme getting a nice push as of late on Smackdown. However, the team of Chris Jericho and Big Show have solidified the tag team division and boosted their own main event status in the process. That run continues as Jericho and Show retain.
Intercontinental Championship
Rey Mysterio (c) vs Dolph Ziggler:
Summerslam has a history of putting on some great IC title matches (Bret vs Bulldog, Rude vs Warrior, HBK vs Razor...the second ladder match, HHH vs Rock) the list goes on. This could be a huge transitional match for the Smackdown brand as Rey Mysterio could drop the strap and ascend back to main event level while Ziggler could solidify his place in the upper mid card by holding his first singles title. I predict that Ziggler gets an unclean win.
ECW Championship
Christian (c) vs William Regal:
This may be the most underrated contest of the evening. These are two solid veterans who could raise the ECW title to a new level of prestige. Christian has been phenomenal since his return and Regal has never been in the main event of a brand...I predict that Christian wins this round...but the war is far from over.
DX vs Legacy:
Its great to see DX again!!!
DX wins...sometimes it is just that simple...one intriguing note...this match may close the show, something to think about
WWE Championship
Randy Orton (c) vs John Cena:
WWE has billed this as "their first meeting in a year and a half"...I know, what a joke. However, these two do have chemistry...however the fact that these two are in the main event all the time is getting redundant. Lets move on people...I predict that Cena gets the win and will be crowned the new champion
TLC Match for the World Heavyweight Championship
Jeff Hardy (c) vs CM Punk:
Oh the drama...Jeff Hardy is on his way out...after the Smackdown tapings this week which leaves the outcome of this match up in the air. Punk has really elevated his game by turning heel and this rivalry has made for some great tv. This is a bonafide match of the year candidate on paper and it will be interesting to see how WWE plays it. I predict that CM Punk gets an unclean win and reclaims his championship.
Those are my predictions...enjoy the show and the biggest party of the summer!!!
